Can you get up off the floor without your hands?

Getting down to the floor and back up uses your hips, legs and core together. It’s a quick look at how much work your low back is doing for the rest of you.

  1. Stand on a soft surface with nothing in your way, and someone nearby if your balance isn’t steady.
  2. Lower yourself to sit cross-legged on the floor, using your hands, a knee or a chair only if you need to.
  3. Stand back up the same way. Notice what you leaned on, and where you felt the effort.

Needed your hands, or felt it in your back? You’re not alone. The class starts right here: why it happens, and what to practice.

Skip this if you’ve had a hip or knee replacement or recent surgery, if you’re pregnant, or if getting to the floor causes pain. It’s an everyday movement check, not a medical test.

What we’ll cover

One hour. One plan you keep.

  1. First

Why your back takes the load.

How your low back is built to move, why rest and stretching alone often fall short, and the floor test together.

  2. Then

Hips and a core that share the work.

Two simple movements: waking up the hips and glutes, and a core that works standing up, for bending, lifting and carrying.

  3. Last

Your day, and your daily plan.

Small changes for the hours you spend sitting, driving and sleeping, put together into a short routine you can keep.

  4. The whole hour

    Live, with questions.

Follow along on camera or just watch. Dr. Kareem answers general questions live at the end.

Is this for you?

Built for everyday low back pain and stiffness.

It’s for you if…

  • Your low back gets stiff or sore from sitting, standing, bending or lifting.
  • You’ve stretched, rested or tried videos, and it keeps coming back.
  • You want to understand what’s going on and have a plan you can do at home.
  • You can get down to the floor, or onto a mat on a bed or a couch.

See a doctor first if…

  • You have new numbness or weakness in your legs, or numbness in your groin or inner thighs.
  • You have new trouble controlling your bladder or bowels. Call 911 or get care today.
  • Your pain followed a fall or accident, or comes with fever, chills or weight loss you can’t explain.
  • Your pain is severe, getting worse, or keeps you up at night.

The class is general education taught to a group. It isn’t physical therapy or medical advice, and it doesn’t evaluate, diagnose or treat any condition. Questions answered live are general, not advice about your own case. Disclaimer

Questions

Before you join.

Is it really free?

Yes. Near the end, Dr. Kareem explains how to work with him 1-on-1 for anyone who wants more help: physical therapy by video in Arizona and Pennsylvania, and coaching anywhere. There’s no pressure, and nothing to buy to get value from the class.

What if I can’t make it live?

Sign up anyway. Everyone who signed up gets the replay by email that evening, and it stays up for 48 hours.

What time is it where I live?

The next class starts at 6:00 pm Arizona time: 8:00 pm Eastern · 7:00 pm Central · 5:00 pm Pacific. Your Zoom link arrives by email when you sign up.

What do I need?

A phone, tablet or computer, a little floor space or a mat, and a sturdy chair. No equipment to buy.

Can I come more than once?

Of course. Come any Tuesday, as often as you like.

Is this physical therapy?

No. The class is general education taught to a group, so it’s open to anyone, anywhere. If you’re in Arizona and Pennsylvania and want 1-on-1 care, you can book a 60-minute evaluation with Dr. Kareem.

Can I ask about my own back?

You can ask questions in the chat, and Dr. Kareem answers them for the whole group in general terms. He can’t assess or advise on your own case in a group class, so please keep private health details out of the chat.
